Restricted by typography, this project explores the relationship between language and motion. The objective was to interpret text and visualise it through animation. I chose to convert a Squarespace commercial, which aired during the 2017 Super Bowl, that promotes John Malkovich’s website.
The final solution utilises sporadic overlapping configurations and movements to channel grungy visuals, borrowing its aesthetic from music videos such as Caterpillar by Royce da 5’9″. My goal was to compete with John Malkovich’s vocal performance, visually mimicking the original content’s emotions and pacing.
The process behind this exercise was straightforward. Working through many iterations and lots of feedback, I sketched out keyframes, translating them between Photoshop and After Effects until I had an artistic representation that paid respect to the initial commercial’s integrity.
